FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Three children escaped unharmed Wednesday from a house fire east of downtown Fort Wayne, the fire department said.

About 3:15 p.m., firefighters were sent to 1315 E. Washington Blvd. where they encountered smoke coming from second-floor windows. Fire crews ran a hose to the second floor and quickly extinguished flames in a bedroom.

The children told firefighters they noticed smoke coming from the bedroom and got out of the house on their own. The blaze caused moderate damage to the two-story house. The cause is under investigation.
