MONESSEN, Pa. — Three Monessen firefighters were hurt battling a blaze that destroyed a single-family home in a residential section of the city Tuesday evening.

The cause of the fire at 120 Pacific St. was unknown. A state police fire marshal is investigating.

“The house was pretty well gutted,” said Monessen fire Chief Timothy Billick. “It’s not liveable. It look likes the family lost nearly everything inside.”

The family, which was not identified, was not at home when the blaze broke out about 6:30 p.m. The fire was under control 45 minutes after personnel arrived on the scene.

One firemen broke his ankle fighting the fire, and two were injured in an accident involving a fire hose. Billick would not identify the firefighters who were hurt, but he said they were treated at Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township in Washington County.

About 50 firefighters, including crews from Belle Vernon and Webster, were on hand. Rostraver fire department was on standby.
