NEW YORK — Fire officials say the number of injuries from a weekend fire at a Brooklyn apartment building has risen to 40. Nine are in critical condition.
The blaze at the four-story building at 61st Street broke out around 5 a.m. Sunday, and was brought under control about two and a half hours later.
The fire department says eight people are critically hurt, four of them with life-threatening injuries.
A firefighter also suffered non-life-threatening critical injuries.
The fire department says 11 other firefighters and 20 civilians suffered minor injuries.
Fire officials initially said a total of 31 people were injured in the fire.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
