NEW YORK — This terrifying Bronx inferno raged for more than five hours — and destroyed a row of businesses — before New York’s Bravest could get it under control.
The six-alarm blaze appeared to begin at Spice Island music, 4225 White Plains Road in Riverdale at around 12:30 a.m. and roared until 5:50 a.m., the FDNY said. Trevor Walker, 48, had just moved the store across the street and was going to celebrate its reopening this weekend.
“It’s devastating, we lost everything,” he said.
A dozen of the 230 firefighters on the scene were hurt, but none suffered life-threatening injuries. No civilians were hurt.
A furniture store, nail salon, store-front church and grocery store were also destroyed.
“How are we going to rebuild?” said Jack Lawrence, owner of the African grocery store King of Kings. “Where is the money going to come from?”
FDNY investigators declined to immediately say what sparked the blaze.
