WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. — Two houses were destroyed when a fire spread from one to the other in Wayne County.

Wayne Assistant Fire Chief Todd Ferguson said firefighters were dispatched to a single structure fire on Keyser Street just after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

He said when fire crews arrived at the home 15 minutes later they found the fire already started to spread to the house next door.

Firefighters found the first house, where the fire started, was empty and quickly evacuated two residents of the second home. He said the two were a mother and daughter, both elderly.

About 20 volunteer firefighters from Wayne, Fort Gay, East Lynn, Lavalette, Ceredo and Kenova battled the large blaze and were able to put it out.

Ferguson said the two houses were a total loss and a third home on the other side of the second home sustained “significant” heat damage as the vinyl siding melted off. That home was inhabitable. He said a few homes across the street from the destroyed houses also suffered slight heat damage.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
