PERTH AMBOY, N.J. — As many as 75 firefighters from 11 fire departments fought a blaze that started early Sunday morning. Firefighters fought for hours to bring the fire under control; in the end, as many as 50 were left homeless and four buildings were destroyed.
Perth Amboy Fire Chief David Volk told NBC New York that the fire’s intensity made it difficult to contain. “I couldn’t stand across the street and look at the building, that’s how intense the fire was,” Volk told NBC.
Five buildings across the street sustained heat damage.
One witness told The Associated Press that it appeared to be raining ashes.
