TOWANDA, Pa. — A fire in Bradford County displaced a number of families and left three apartment buildings with heavy damage. Eight fire departments were called out to Main Street in Towanda early Saturday afternoon for a rare fourth-alarm fire, including the North Towanda, Wysox and Afton departments.

Crews said they were on the scene within a matter of minutes, but the apartment buildings are attached and share a common attic, which allowed the flames to spread quickly.

Main Street was shut down while firefighters battled what they called a “block fire.” Crews said a woman was inside one of the buildings for 45 minutes during the fire, but she managed to get out safely.
