NORRIDGE, Ill. — Firefighters on Wednesday morning rescued eight people who were hanging off a second floor balcony as fire raged around them.

Cmdr. Dave Blondell with the Norwood Park Fire Department said ground ladders were used to get the residents down from the home on the 7900 block of West Gunnison Street in Norridge before 6 a.m. “My grandparents, my cousins and my aunts and my uncles were all in the fire,” said resident Tammy Le.

Those rescued, as well as two Norridge Police Officers, were hospitalized. Four were taken to Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center while the other four went to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. All were released by 1 p.m.
