BOSTON — A basement fire on Boylston Street yesterday sparked $150,000 worth of damage and sent one firefighter to the hospital with a back injury while others battled heat exhaustion, fire officials said yesterday.
The fire started at 10:05 a.m. at 655 Boylston St., close to Copley Plaza, in a four-story brick office building, according to Steve MacDonald, spokesman for the Boston Fire Department.
“The fire itself wasn’t large by fire standards, but there were difficulties finding it,” MacDonald said. “The basement was just loaded with smoke.”
MacDonald said the injured firefighter was released from Massachusetts General Hospital last night.
Firefighters called Nstar and City Electrical to cut off the electricity to the building, which houses the family-run New England Dental Center on the first floor. The Charlesmark Hotel and Lounge, also at that address, was up and running last night. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
