CHICAGO — Firefighters are still battling a huge multiple-alarm blaze at a strip mall in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side, where the roof of the main building has now collapsed.

The fire was reported just before 4 p.m. in one building in the 3100 block of West Peterson, according to fire dispatch reports. It was upgraded to a second alarm minutes later because of heavy smoke and flames, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The third alarm was called about 4:30 p.m. after firefighters were forced to leave the initial 100-by-100-foot commercial building and fight the blaze from the outside after the fire went through the roof, according to dispatch reports.
