ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. — An airplane crash in St. Charles Parish left two people dead Sunday afternoon, the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office said.

About 4:20 p.m., deputies received a call of a possible plane crash in Ama, St. Charles Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne Lagrange said.

First responders found a small airplane on fire. After putting the fire out, they found two people inside, Lagrange said. Both were dead.

The victims’ identities are being withheld until family can be notified.

The two apparently were the only passengers on board, Lagrange said.

The aircraft appeared to be a small private plane, Lagrange said.

He said the plane had taken off from St. Charles Airport, also known as Ama Airport.

Jerry Weinberg, the airport’s manager, said he didn’t yet have any details on the accident or the type of aircraft. He said the Federal Aviation Administration was beginning its investigation.

Calls to an FAA spokesman were not returned Sunday night.

In addition to the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified, Lagrange said.

The Ama Airport’s Web site describes the airfield as a private club and home of the St. Charles Aviation Association.
