GREENSBORO, NC — Firefighters contained a fire on the roof of a chemical plant Thursday afternoon, despite windy conditions.

The two-alarm fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. by callers who saw heavy, black smoke and fire on the roof of the Sherwin-Williams Chemical Coatings plant at 113 Stage Coach Trail.

A second alarm for more firefighters was sent out about 1:44 p.m., in part because of the windy conditions.

Firefighters initially had trouble getting water from an aerial truck onto the roof because of the high wind.

The fire did not get inside the building, said David Douglas, assistant chief of the Greensboro Fire Department.

There was no release of hazardous chemicals from the building.

There were no injuries.

The plant employs 70 people who make wood coatings for kitchen cabinets and furniture, a company spokesman said.

The company was having work done on the roof, but firefighters are not sure if that caused the fire, Douglas said. The fire has been labeled accidental.
