NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Firefighters battled flames at Warwick Baptist Church on Curtis Tignor Road in the Denbigh section of Newport News Thursday. Workers at a nearby Texaco gas station called 911 around 5:30 a.m. after seeing smoke in the area.
Fire Chief Ken Jones tells WAVY.com arriving firefighters were greeted by heavy smoke coming from the structure. He says the church was totally consumed and will be a total loss.
Jones said 10 fire trucks and 36 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the fire. Crews continued working to put out any, and all hot spots.
