ALAMOGORDO, NM — The Alamogordo Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation of a structure fire in the 100 block of west Eighth Street Sunday night, a spokesman said.

Lt. Gary Smith said ADPS investigators have not determined the exact cause of the fire.

Smith said the building was a storage structure adjacent to the old Allied Moving and Storage building, 101 W. Seventh St.

He said the building had nothing of value being storedwithin at the time of the fire.

The single story adobe building caught fire around 10:30 p.m., he said.

“The building was a total loss,” Smith said. “It was an adobe building. The only wood in the building was the flooring and support beams.”

He said it took firefighters until about 2 a.m. to completely extinguish the fire.

“We did leave one fire truck at the scene,” Smith said. “We left it at the scene through the night for smoldering. It’s the amount of wood inside the structure that could catch or flare up again.”

He said no one was injured in the fire.

“We did have to call in mutual aid from Alamo West and Dungan fire departments,” Smith said. “They responded to assist in exposure protection.

“The fire was so close to the Shell gas station. We wanted tomake sure that we had enough help to protect the exposures (Shell station).”
