JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. — Firefighters’ efforts to fight a two-alarm fire in Jamaica Plain yesterday were complicated by flooding in the basement.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. in the basement of a 2 1/2-story, two-family home on McBride Street, Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said.

Water was 3 feet deep in the basement.

“It presented a challenge to the firefighters because they couldn’t get into the basement where it started, to effectively fight it,’' he said. “We’re spraying water to put the fire out, so we’re only adding to it.’'

Seven people were displaced, but none of them were injured, MacDonald said.

Two firefighters received minor injuries.

Although the cause is still under investigation, water and electrical panels aren’t a good combination, MacDonald said, adding that firefighters are lucky there weren’t more blazes in the past 48 hours.
