COVINGTON, Ga. — A Newton County fireman was injured Sunday while he was responding to a house fire in Porterdale.
Newton County Fire Rescue crews responded around 10:30 a.m. to a fire that broke out in a 1,000-square-foot home on Hazel-Ivy Street. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke showing from the attic area. After making sure all residents were out of the house, firefighters entered the home in an attempt to extinguish the blaze, according to a report from Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien.
“Interior crews determined they could not reach the back room, where the fire was located, from inside the structure,” O’Brien stated. Firefighters outside the home then worked to extinguish the fire by creating ventilation through the attic eave. During this exterior attack of the fire, one of the firemen working off a ladder fell approximately 15 feet landing on his back and air pack.
