Houston firefighter injured in deadly motel fire improving

Capt. William Dowling’s family said he is well enough to be brought of his medically induced coma

HOUSTON — The family of a firefighter who was critically injured in last month’s deadly hotel fire says he is improving.

KHOU reported that Capt. William Dowling’s family said he is well enough to be brought out of his medically induced coma and is now opening his eyes and recognizing his family.

“Jackie said that she could feel him clutch her hand when she would say, ‘I got to go now.’ When she’s about to leave he hangs on to her,” said Rickie Dowling, his father. “Very good day, good day today.”

Capt. Dowling, who had part of both legs amputated after getting injured in the fire, hasn’t spoken yet, but his family is ecstatic over the good news, according to the report.
