Iowa fire chief fights blaze at family home

STACYVILLE, Iowa — Joan Adams saw a fire demolish the Stacyville house where she had lived 59 years and raised six children Thursday.

Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department dispatch put out the call to 301 S. Water St. at 11:12 a.m. Stacyville Police Chief Kim Orth was first on the scene at 11:24 a.m., dispatch stated. Stacyville Fire Chief Jay Adams reported leaving the scene five hours later.

When Adams arrived, he found the “house was engulfed in fire, through the roof and coming out through the windows.” Joan Adams, the homeowner, was out “before we got here,” Jay Adams said. Jay Adams is her son. Adams said it was “pretty emotional” putting out a fire in the house where he grew up. The house was a total loss, Adams said. There were no injuries.
