REISTERTOWN, Md. — A volunteer firefighter died Wednesday morning following critical injuries after responding to a three-alarm blaze at a Baltimore County home.
Gene Kirchner, 25, of Reisterstown, who was a member of Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company, was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma after he was found injured and unconscious in the house fire.
Two days ago, it was announced he was in critical but stable condition and would be transferred to a rehab center, according to firefighterclosecalls.com.
“BCoFD’s thoughts are with his family at this difficult time,” said Baltimore County Public Safety spokesperson Elise Armacost.
Firefighters immediately honored Kirchner’s memory this afternoon by placing black bunting on the firehouse, according to the report.
Kirchner was a seven-year veteran of the fire company, according to the Baltimore Sun. Resident Steven Starr, 58, died in the fire, which remains under investigation.
