MATTHEW, N.C. — A Matthew volunteer fireman injured fighting a house fire Friday night might have suffered a medical issue that caused him to fall through the attic, authorities said.
The fire is believed to have started in a van parked outside the house on Selma Burke Lane and spread quickly to the house and the attic. Firefighters got the call about 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The injured firefighter was in the attic, when he fell through and landed in a room that wasn’t burning. Other firefighters were able to get to him quickly and carry him to safety, officials said.
WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, reported Fire Chief and EMS Chief Dennis Green saying he believed the firefighter had a medical issue that caused him to fall.
As of late Friday, the firefighter was in intensive care at Carolinas Medical Center. He wasn’t burned. OSHA will investigate the incident since a firefighter was injured, WBTV reported.
