PEQUANNOCK, N.J. — A firefighter suffered second- and third-degree burns fighting a blaze that displaced a Pequannock family from their home on Monday.

Chris Murphy of Pequannock’s Engine Company No. 2 was in the attic of the home at 248 Jacksonville Road fighting the flames when steam and heat penetrated his gear, fire officials said. He was transported to the burn center of St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston where he was treated for second- and third-degree burns on his neck and back. He was discharged later in the day.

The fire, which was reported at 2:40 p.m., began when an overheated car caught fire in the driveway of the home and spread to vinyl siding and engulfed much of the house.
