HAMILTON, N.J. — Firefighters extinguished a small petroleum fire at the Congoleum plant today that may have started when workers were dismantling equipment.

Deputy Chief Chris Tozzi of Mercerville Fire Company said passing motorists called in reports of large volumes of smoke coming from the Congoleum plant, which manufactures tile and sheet flooring.

“This is a very, very large industrial complex,” Tozzi said. “Smoke coming from a building like that makes your hair stand up.”
