NY firefighters shot at responding to house fire

The suspect set fire to his house and shot at the first firefighters on scene; no one was injured

LeROY, N.Y. — Firefighters were shot at while responding to a house fire Tuesday morning.

The Buffalo News reported that firefighters with the LeRoy (N.Y.) Fire Department were kept from the fire scene initially because of an active shooter situation. Fire officials said the suspect shot at the first firefighters on scene. No firefighters were injured in the incident.

The Batavian reported that in addition to LeRoy, firefighters from Stafford and Pavillion fire departments responded to the scene.

Two people were inside the home when the shooting took place. Police say the suspect set his own house on fire and then went to a neighbor’s house and shot a man who was in bed.

A woman at the scene, who identified herself as the victim’s sister-in-law, said 68-year-old Norman Donald Ball was shot and killed.

Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn says it appears the suspect wanted police to shoot him.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
