PORTLAND, Ore. — An off-duty firefighter helped remove two people from a burning vacant home in Southeast Portland on Wednesday.

William Earl spotted smoke about 10:35 a.m., coming from a home on Southeast 97th Avenue and Holgate Boulevard while driving by and called 911, said Lt. Damon Simmons, a Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman.

Earl saw a man and woman inside and helped them escape through a window with the help of another passer-by, Simmons said. The man and woman were taken to the hospital for an evaluation and no one else was found inside.
