ARLINGTON, Texas — Arlington police responded to the scene of an attempted suicide Monday morning after a man reportedly doused himself in gasoline and set a fire.
Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Carla Avenue for a suicide attempt, and they then called in the fire department to put out the house fire.
Police said that the man reportedly doused himself with gas during an argument. Three people were inside the home at the time, police said, and two “frantic” women called authorities.
When police entered the home to calm the man down, he began to douse himself in more gasoline. He was acting erratically, police said.
A police spokeswoman said the man held something ignitable in his hand when police used Tasers to subdue him. The man then became engulfed in flames.
It was unclear whether the ignitable object or the Tasers started the fire.
Officers attempted to stop the fire by covering it in blankets from the room. An officer outside the house busted through a window to remove the man.
Three officers were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation “but are okay,” police said. The man also was hospitalized.
Police said this isn’t the first time they’ve been sent to the home. The man reportedly has an outstanding warrant for assault — family violence.
Police have not released the man’s identity.
