GARDINER, Maine — Three firefighters suffered minor injuries when a roof collapsed Thursday evening in Gardiner.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. on Water Street, starting in a brick building and taking over several apartments and businesses. More than 10 fire departments and at least 100 firefighters battled the blaze. The roof of the building where the fire started collapsed, causing bricks to shower down on the firefighters, injuring three.

Fire Chief Al Nelson said the buildings were bowing, but he wasn’t sure if they’d have to knock them down. Neighbors and residents are upset to see the buildings so damaged. One of the damaged business, Touch of Grey Tattoo Studio, recently invested $15,000 into the business.
