Texas firefighter attacked by student at bonfire

EL PASO, Texas (published in 1966) — El Paso fireman Mike Crenshaw was injured shortly after 11 p.m. when he was struck by an unidentified student as he tried to put out the Victory bonfire at the corner of College Avenue and Hawthorne Street.

Witnesses said Crenshaw tried to douse the fire and someone struck him with a tree branch.

He was rushed to Providence Hospital by El Paso Ambulance Service.

People were throwing large signs, trees, branches, picket fences and their own shirts on the fire which was on the sidewalk near the College Administration Building.
