LAYTON, Utah — Even with a smoldering garage, firefighters managed to bring joy to a 9-year-old girl Monday night.

The girl, her twin brothers and parents were at their residence near 2200 North and 2900 East about 6 p.m. when someone noticed smoke coming from the garage.

Layton and Kaysville fire crews responded to a garage fire that took 30 minutes to put out.

The blaze cost the family their vehicles and caused at least $60,000 in damage.

Standing outside the home, the girl was concerned for her family’s Christmas presents, especially the Nintendo DS she had received, said Layton Fire spokesman Doug Bitton.

“The firefighters were able to bring her Nintendo DS out, and she was really enlightened again with Christmas,” Bitton said.

Hill Air Force Base is helping the military family temporarily as fire officials continue clearing out the smoke, he said.
