BERNARDSTON, Mass. — A veteran firefighter’s home was damaged due to a fire Tuesday morning.

WWLP reported that the roof was badly burned before firefighters were able to get the fire under control. The homeowner is a 12-year veteran of the Bernardston Fire Department and is the nephew of the fire chief.

Fire Chief Peter Shedd said that such a fire is particularly upsetting when one of your own is a victim, according to the report.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is looking into the cause of the fire, which Chief Shedd says is believed to have started in the chimney, according to the report.
