SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — A firefighter was severely injured after falling through the floor into a basement while battling a house fire Sunday morning.
WCHStv reported that a woman, the only person inside the house, was able to make it out. When firefighters were inside the home battling the flames, firefighter Jared Cruz fell through the floor into a basement.
Crews were able to get him out and firefighter Cruz was taken to a hospital.
“Prayers are going out to him and his family,” neighbor Michael Phillips said. “I’ve known him for several years — a heck of a nice guy. It’s risky when you’re out working fires. You always take those chances to save other peoples’ property.”
The woman inside the home was also taken to a hospital, then treated and released, according to the report.
Firefighter Cruz had burns to his upper body and fluid in his lungs, but is expected to be OK, according to the report. Another firefighter sustained a minor shoulder injury after coming to his aid.
