Iowa fire department seeks recruits

ALTOONA, Iowa — The Altoona Fire Department is accepting applications for emergency services providers for the upcoming Recruit Academy starting in January.

The Altoona Fire Department provides emergency services to all residents and visitors in Altoona and surrounding areas to include: fire response, suppression, investigation, salvage and overhaul, prevention and education, hazardous material operations, rescue & extrication, and emergency medical treatment and treatment and transport.

Multiple types of working conditions exist including heights, below ground operations, harmful atmosphere and environmental conditions for extended periods of time, known dangerous environments occurring all hours of the day and night and extreme heat and cold temperatures.

Requirements: High school education or GED, good physical condition, valid Iowa drivers license and proof of auto liability insurance. Individuals will be required to take a reading comprehension and physical agility exam. Successful completion of motor vehicle and background criminal check, pre-employment physical and drug screen, CPR and first-aid certification will be required prior to the start of the academy.
