YARMOUTH, Mass. — A veteran firefighter died Saturday night after being struck by an alleged drunk driver.

CBS3 reported that firefighter Kevin Regan, 62, and his fiancée were struck by the driver while trying to cross the street. Regan died at the hospital shortly after the accident and his fiancée, Linda Cavanaugh, 62, was flown to the hospital and is being treated for serious injuries. She is expected to survive.

Police arrested Paul Dennehy, 55, in connection with the incident. He is being charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating under the influence causing serious injury. He is scheduled to be arraigned today.

Westfield Deputy Fire Chief James Kane said he and firefighter Regan had been lifelong friends.

“Kevin was a great guy, just a great guy,” Kane said. “He was very involved in the Westfield retirement system as the chairman and he was our number-one badge at the department.”

Regan had been a Westfield firefighter for 43 years and joined the department at 19. His sister is Westfield Fire Chief Mary Regan.

Regan leaves eight siblings — five brothers and three sisters.

Police said poor visibility due to heavy fog and darkness may have contributed to the accident.
