PHILADELPHIA — It’s official; Adam Thiel was sworn in as Philadelphia’s fire commissioner Monday.
“I’m really happy to get here and get started,” Thiel told CBS.
Thiel, 43, had previously led fire departments in four other states.
“My goal is to visit one firehouse each day to get to know my fire department family,” Thiel said.
Thiel plans to build stronger relationships with community groups, including faith-based groups.
The Democratic National Convention will take place in the city this summer, and planning for the convention is a priority for Thiel.
Union President Andy Thomas said he was looking forward to working with Thiel on important issues like securing more funding for the fire department. The union had criticized the mayor for not naming a commissioner from within the ranks when Thiel’s appointment was announced.
“There are big challenges ahead, but we’re looking forward to a good result,” Thiel said.
After the ceremony, Thiel celebrated with his family over lunch and was measured for his new fire department gear.
