Retired deputy fire chief dies in motorcycle crash

Chief Gary Baggett retired on Feb. 6 after almost 30 years of service, including more than five years as deputy chief

DALTON, Ga. — Former Dalton Deputy Fire Chief Gary Baggett died Saturday night following a motorcycle accident on the Cleveland Highway just north of the city.

“He was well loved and well respected in the ranks,” said Dalton Mayor Dennis Mock. “This is a terrible shock and a heavy blow to this city.”

The accident happened around 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of the Cleveland Highway and Westbrook Road.

“Preliminary information indicates that Baggett was traveling southbound on Cleveland Highway riding a motorcycle when a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck traveling northbound in the turn lane attempted to turn left onto Westbrook Road in front of Baggett’s motorcycle,” according to Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier. “Baggett’s motorcycle struck the truck.”

Baggett was transported to Hamilton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.

The accident was initially investigated the by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, but at press time the investigation had been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol.

Baggett retired from the Dalton Fire Department on Feb. 6 after almost 30 years of service, including more than five years as deputy chief.
