ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Two men say they were bullied and mistreated in the time they spent hoping to become Albuquerque firefighters. The former AFD cadets say it was hazing. They both were in the academy within the last year and say they have never been treated so poorly.
“It’s a very difficult process,” one of the former cadets said. “(The cadets) are pushed to the point of injury.” For aspiring Albuquerque firefighters, they must first go through the department’s academy. “You’re treated very poorly,” the former cadet said. He describes it as Hell.
“It was completely unprofessional.” He’s currently a firefighter at another department. “You go in there with that positive attitude knowing you’re going to serve your community and do a good thing for the people of Albuquerque,” he said.
