CHICAGO — A distraught young mother left her 6-month-old with firefighters at a West Side firehouse Monday morning after telling them she couldn’t deal with being a mother anymore, fire officials say.
The 19-year-old walked up to Engine 107 in the 1100 block of South California Avenue about 9 a.m. with a well-bundled and fed infant boy, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
The woman appeared to be distraught and said she wanted to leave the child “because she couldn’t deal with her situation anymore,” Langford said.
Firefighters did not question the woman and did not get her name. The “Safe Haven” law allows parents to drop off their infants to police stations, firehouses and hospitals, but only for children under 30 days old.
Still, firefighters did not refuse the 6-month-old child.
The mother stayed at the firehouse until the baby was taken to a hospital. Then, she just walked away, Langford said.
