Chief suspended for swearing-in new firefighters

City attorneys said he was not authorized for conducting the ceremony

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A fire chief has been suspended for five days after he wrongly conducted a swearing-in ceremony for new firefighters.

Indystar.com reported that Chief James Sipes ignored the advice of the city attorney and issued the oath of office to four new firefighters.

“She also recited the law to you from her law books,” Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said. “After being advised of such, you swore in four new firefighters. You also swore in numerous other personnel into various positions.”

City attorneys said he was not authorized to swear in new employees, according to the report.
