GRETHEL, Ky. — A 22-year-old female college senior has been selected as a new fire chief — and the first woman to the position — in the department’s history.
WSAZ reported that Stephanie McKinney, 22, a senior biology and psychology major at the University of Pikeville, has been a member of the Mud Creek Fire Department for three years.
“It is hard...it is like it’s a man’s job, a man’s world, and I really have to show myself and overcome obstacles,” McKinney said. “It is fun and there’s so much support in this department, they are all rooting for me and it is amazing.”
McKinney says she is also thankful for the outpouring of support from surrounding departments, according to the report.
