DETROIT — City officials have put plans on hold indefinitely to hire 100 more firefighters starting Monday.
CBS Detroit reported that Union leaders had been working on a plan to move fire stations and supply them with new equipment. But, in the interim, planned hiring is on hold.
Fire Commissioner Don Austin is looking to outsource firefighters’ agility training and officials say the city’s financial problems have left the department short-staffed, according to the report.
Two years ago, the city had more than 1,000 firefighters, according to the report. Now, the city has fewer than 800. Firefighters respond to about 20 fires per day.
