AUSTIN — Austin Fire Department has suspended firefighter Troy McMillin after he was arrested for taking a loaded gun to the Austin airport in January.

In a memorandum made public Monday, Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr suspended McMillin for five days with no pay starting Monday after he was charged for taking a handgun to Austin-Bergstrom International airport on Jan. 24.

McMillin was charged with taking a weapon to a prohibited place. He has a court hearing scheduled on Wednesday in the 299th District Court, court records showed.

The suspension results from a violation to the fire department’s code of conduct that states firefighters must comply with all laws, the memo said.

McMillin was preparing to board a flight to Chicago when he went through a security checkpoint with a loaded handgun stored in a carry-on bag, the memo said. In interviews, he told investigators he had accidentally placed the handgun in the bag, the memo said, noting that fire officials believe the violation was unintentional.

McMillin can appeal the suspension.
