DIXON, Ill. — The fire department in the northern Illinois community of Dixon has marked a milestone -- hiring its first female firefighter.
The (Dixon) Telegraph reports that Crystal Brasington started work last month. The 31-year-old moved to the area from Texas for the job. She says it is something she’s always wanted to do.
Dixon isn’t alone in its low number of female firefighters.
The newspaper reports that nearby Sterling has never had any female firefighters and Rock Falls has only had one.
Brasington says her first job in Texas wasn’t a positive experience and believes some of it had to do with not being accepted. But she says that hasn’t been the case so far in Dixon.
