ALBERMARLE, Va. — Two central Virginia counties are tracking ways to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. Albemarle and Orange hope their part in a statewide study will help community fire companies add to their ranks.

Michael Yancey signed up with the Orange Volunteer Fire Company when he turned 16. “I’ve volunteered here for 18 years,” said Yancey, who is now the assistant fire chief.
