WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A two-alarm blaze had West Valley City Fire Department crews rushing to a four-unit apartment complex early Wednesday morning.

Five residents were treated for smoke inhalation and released at the scene of the 3 a.m. fire near 4100 South and 4900 West. A sixth resident, a man, was taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital in good condition for treatment of hand lacerations he sustained while breaking out a window, said West Valley Fire Chief John Evans.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before it caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, but it appeared to have started in a breezeway space common to the four units, Evans said.

The Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross said it is helping 12 residents — 10 adults and two children — with food, clothing and shelter needs.
