SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — A Saratoga Springs girl fell into an open manhole Sunday night while she was walking on Main Street.
The girl, 11, fell 10 to 15 feet when she stepped into the hole about 7:20 p.m., said Lehi Battalion Fire Chief Rick Howard. The girl’s injuries were not critical, but kept her from climbing up the ladder and out of the hole. A technical rescue team hoisted her up in a harness, Howard said.
The manhole cover — and the paved ring it rests on — had been knocked off the hole and were resting next to it, Howard said. He speculated it was broken off by a snowplow or other vehicle.
“It couldn’t have been maliciously pulled off” by hand, he said.
