Houston firefighters temporarily leave hospital to attend firefighters’ memorial

Firefighters Anthony Livesay and Robert Yarborough returned to the hospital immediately following the service

HOUSTON — Two firefighters had to fight to attend the memorial service to honor the four Houston firefighters who died battling a hotel blaze last week.

KHOU reported that firefighter Anthony Livesay was released from the hospital, because missing it was “not an option.”

“No matter what your station number is or where you are stationed, together this is a whole brotherhood. One big family,” said Houston Fire Department firefighter Orlando Logan.

Livesay, who was on an ambulance stretcher, spent several minutes before the service meeting privately with the families of the fallen four, according to the report. He returned to the hospital immediately following the service.

“You almost can’t put into words how important it is. It is one of those things where you hate it’s happening, but for us to move on we have to learn from it,” Logan said.

Firefighter Robert Yarborough, who was also still hospitalized but allowed to attend the service, was carried in a wheelchair and cared for by his family, according to the report.

“Sad to say this could be their first fire, this could be their last fire. The thing is the whole goal is we are going in together we are coming out together,” Logan said.
