NORTH BEAVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Some people think volunteer firefighters just put out grass fires and direct traffic at accident scenes.
But Nick Toscano, 41, of Mount Jackson, knows the true value of his local volunteer fire department. Less than two weeks ago, a 19-year-old volunteer from the North Beaver Township department brought him back from the dead.
The last thing Toscano remembers about Jan. 2 is that he was talking with a man in a neighboring apartment. Later, they told Toscano that he collapsed on the kitchen floor and his neighbor, Richard McKinney, called 911. The emergency call went out over the scanner as a cardiac arrest for a man with no pulse and no heartbeat.
