ARMADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An Armada Township firefighter was injured early Wednesday morning when a large log fell on him while the department battled a blaze on 33 Mile Road.

Firefighter and paramedic Andy Pfeifle was on the scene of a fire Nov. 13 on 33 Mile Road between North Avenue and Armada Ridge Road when he was struck by a tree, fire officials said. “I’m talking 14 inches in diameter, 20-foot tall,” firefighter Ryan Antos said of the tree. “It came down on him and put him in the ground like a tent stake.”

Officials said Pfeifle was hit in the back of the head and will stay in the hospital for the next few days while he recovers. “He has some, all mendable, but very uncomfortable, injuries,” Township Supervisor John Paterek said. “It was probably four inches away from losing a man here and having a funeral. It was that close. He’s in good spirits; he’s in good hands. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to both him and his wife, Sarah.”
