COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Columbia/Boone County Joint Communications 911 Center was back to normal operations at 11 p.m. Sunday after the office was evacuated for a small fire.
At 9:15 p.m., the building that houses the 911 center was evacuated because of smoke and a possible small fire, Joint Communications Director Zim Schwartze said in a statement. Six staff members were in the center, 17 N. Seventh St. in downtown Columbia, at the time. No one was injured.
Some “Emergency Telecommunicators” were relocated to maintain limited phone capabilities, Schwartze said. At 10:58 p.m., the office sent out a statement saying it was back to normal operations and able to handle all police, fire and medical calls for service.
Columbia firefighters responded to the fire, which appears to have been electrical in nature, Schwartze said.
“We are very thankful that this incident did not result in any injuries,” Schwartze said in the statement. “The fire was limited to one call-taking area but did temporarily affect other consoles as well. Our center is once again fully operational and residents can continue to call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies. We want to thank Columbia Police and Fire Departments for their response and cooperation during the incident.”
