DEMING, N.M. — Ladies of the Desert Stitchers Quilting Guild on Thursday presented 32 quilts to area law enforcement and firefighters for officers, deputies and fire house personnel to distribute to children whom they encounter when responding to calls.
The quilts are security blankets, if you will, for children in high-stress situations — calls involving domestic violence, calls for medical attention for a family member, responses to fire calls.
The “Children’s quilts,” as guild member Lovetta Wright has called them, were distributed to Deming Fire Chief Edgar Davalos, Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos and Deming Police Chief Michael Carillo. Carillo and Cobos received 11 each, Davalos 10.
“We had a lady do a center part (of a quilt,)” guild member Nancy Costa said of the guild’s work, “and then each lady added a strip, a round-robin (project).”
A person could make a quilt in a day, if he or she chose to, the ladies said. These took a bit longer, given the round-robin process.
The guild began in 2007, with about six stitchers. They met in different members’ homes but, as the guild grew, a larger space was need. The group now meets at First United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Granite St., where it distributed the quilts.
