N.Y. firefighter struck by hit-and-run driver on scene

The firefighter suffered a deep bruise to his leg and will be off the job for several weeks to recover

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A firefighter injured in a hit-and-run crash Monday night is expected to be off the job for several weeks to recover from a leg injury.

The Democrat and Chronicle reported that the firefighter suffered a deep bruise to his leg when he was struck by a car as he removed a pike pole from the back of a fire truck stopped on the street.

The firefighter was taken to a hospital where he was treated and later released.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t more serious,” Capt. Edward Kuppinger said. “Hopefully it’s a reminder that firefighters, police officers, transportation and utility workers are out on the roads to protect the community.”

The fire truck had just arrived at the scene when the vehicle struck the firefighter and left the scene, according to the report.

“Many people are inconvenienced by us and try to go around,” Kuppinger said.

Police and fire officials are looking to speak with the driver to determine what happened, according to the report.
